July 2011: Enhance Your Running With Our New Foot Massage
We offer a new runner’s specific treatment at our Sigma Sport clinic. It was developed by Aurelie over the last few months, whilst looking after long distance runners, helping them recover from marathon and ironman training. It focuses on patients’ feet, ankles and lower legs.
The techniques used assist patients through conditions such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, strained calves & shin splints, working alongside physiotherapists and other medical professionals.
Awareness of the feet is an important first step towards an enjoyable running career. The foot contains 26 bones, 20 muscles, countless ligaments and blood vessels as well as thousands of nerve endings. Many patients are amazed at how an apparently small incident such as a black toenail or bruised sole can affect their performance.
Some feet troubles can be avoided by developing healthy habits; such as understanding biomechanics; dealing with blisters, verruca and ingrowing nails promptly; working on toe and foot mobility and wearing correct footwear (on and off the track…) Our runner’s foot massage will go a long way towards soothing the fascia (the connective tissue around muscles).
Most importantly, it is an incredibly relaxing treatment as it uses reflexology principles. Reflexology is a non-intrusive complementary health therapy, based on the theory that different points on the feet & lower leg correspond with different areas of the body. It helps improve circulation, remove toxins and balance the body.
Our runner’s foot massage takes 40 minutes and includes a deep tissue full leg massage with particular attention to calves, tibialis and extensor muscles. Half of the treatment uses trigger point techniques with a range of pressure applied on the dorsal and plantar muscles of the foot.
If you are a runner, why not try it yourself? You will benefit from £10 discount on this treatment during July and August (£35 instead of £45).
As with all our treatments, there are contra indications you will need to discuss with your GP and get approval for before coming to see us. These include pregnancy, thrombosis, diabetes, epilepsy and arthritis.
